Combining the names of American movie idol Marilyn Monroe and infamous cult leader Charles Manson, Brian Hugh Warner adopted the stage persona of Marilyn Manson. The name originally referred to the band which was called “Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids” before being abbreviated to simply “Marilyn Manson”. However, the name was soon claimed by Warner as his personal stage persona. Born in January 1969 in the town of Canton in Ohio, Brian Warner is an only son and boasts English, German and Irish ancestry and also claims Sioux heritage. After graduating from Glen Oak High School in 1987 Warner relocated to Fort Lauderdale in Florida where he enrolled at the Broward Community College and studied for a degree in journalism. During this period Warner was also writing for the music magazine “25th Parallel” and met and interviewed bands such as “The Perfect” and “Nine Inch Nails” that were to later influence his own career. While working as a music journalist Warner met guitarist Scott “Daisy Berkowitz” Putesky and the pair formed “Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids” in 1989. Although the band quickly built up a loyal following it wasn’t until the release of their debut album “Portrait of an American Family” in 1994 that they came to national attention. The following year saw the band release an EP which yielded the MTV hit “Sweet Dreams Are Made of This”, a rockier rendering of the Eurythmics 1983 song. Marilyn Manson truly arrived in 1996 with the album “Antichrist Superstar” giving the band their biggest success to date and cementing its place in rock history. Between 1994 and 2017, Manson has released ten top-selling albums, of which three went gold and two platinum, with two of those releases hitting the Number One spot. Never one to shy away from the limelight, Manson is a controversial character but one of the most successful rock stars of the last few decades. Still touring and attracting fans from around the globe, a Marilyn Manson concert combines driving rock music with performance art and can best be described as an unforgettable experience rather than a gig!
